Rapid advances in technology have transformed today's business climate. Working knowledge of technology is necessary to recognize and capitalize on trends that can impact business. Such knowledge is crucial to understanding the implications of these strategic decisions.

The skills needed by today's business leaders span several disciplines and are not typically available through traditional business or computer science programs. With a tradition of innovation, pragmatism and interdisciplinary collaboration, Carnegie Mellon readily bridged this gap. The MISM program is not based in a single school or division, but, instead, draws upon the university's many strengths. Carnegie Mellon's strong ties to the business community likewise open diverse opportunities for projects and research.

Students broaden their understanding through client projects that address real-world problems. Through these experiences, students gain practical skills as well as expertise in navigating unstructured situations. Reflecting the changing workforce and increasingly global economy, teamwork is a common theme throughout coursework and projects.

We realize that students have their own goals and requirements. The combination of electives and specializations provides them with the opportunity to design a program that fulfills their interests, needs and career goals. In addition to courses offered through the MISM program, students can further focus on their interests through courses offered across the Carnegie Mellon campus or at nearby universities. For example, MISM students have taken networking and programming courses within Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science as well as courses in Carnegie Mellon's Graduate School of Industrial Administration and the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Information Science and Telecommunications.

Specializations

MISM students may pursue a general IS curriculum or select from four specializations including information security management, strategic information processing, electronic commerce and medical informatics. These specializations represent the latest advances in technology and incorporate faculty research and important business issues.

Our students enter the program with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Professional experience spans such areas as IS/IT, business, finance, consulting, accounting, marketing, law, or entrepreneurial ventures. Many have undergraduate degrees in computer science, information sciences, engineering, electronics, physics and other technical fields. Others have degrees in business, marketing, accounting, finance, and economics. A current class profile includes further information on students, GRE/GMAT scores, work experience and undergraduate degrees.

All MISM graduates aspire to leadership roles in organizations for which information technology is a key aspect of the business strategy. Some are focused on technical careers. Others aspire to managerial roles or to management consulting.
